Commission XX Intelligent Manufacturing focuses on the research, development, standardization, and dissemination of knowledge related to Artificial Intelligence-enabled manufacturing processes, with particular emphasis on welding, joining, additive manufacturing, inspection, monitoring, automation, robotics, process optimization, and digital quality assurance. The Commission will serve as a transversal knowledge hub within the IIW, supporting existing Commissions by analyzing, contextualizing, and sharing the state of the art in intelligent and AI-driven methods applicable across multiple manufacturing domains.
The Commission’s mission is to promote the safe, effective, ethical, and scientifically sound adoption of AI-driven intelligent manufacturing technologies in welding, joining, and allied industrial processes, while fostering knowledge exchange and international collaboration among researchers, industry stakeholders, and standardization bodies.
Its technical and scientific objectives include continuously mapping and updating the state of the art of AI-based methods relevant to welding and manufacturing, covering areas such as Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Digital Twins, predictive process modeling, real-time process control, sensor fusion and advanced monitoring systems, intelligent robotics and autonomous manufacturing, and Generative AI for design and optimization. The Commission will also identify opportunities and limitations associated with the application of AI across different welding and manufacturing processes, develop guidelines, frameworks, and best practices for the safe and reliable integration of AI technologies in industrial environments, and support standardization activities related to terminology, data formats, interoperability, and ethical AI requirements in alignment with international standards such as ISO and CEN. In addition, it will encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration among IIW Technical Commissions, recognizing the transversal nature and broad impact of AI-driven manufacturing technologies.
